Turning the Spotlight on Our Daily Stress
What you told me was that daily stress that you can't get rid of is the biggest block you're dealing with right now.
So that's what we're going to go after this month and probably next month, too. And the place to start is with getting really clear about what the problem and how it is affecting you right now.
(1) Make a daily stress list identifying what bothers you most, and give it a rating as to how much it bothers you on a scale of 1-10.
For example, let's say you work for a boss who undervalues your work and appears to favor a coworker who underfunctions, and the rating you chose is 9.
(2) Identify how it affects you each day: what happens to your body, what happens to your thoughts, what happens to your feelings?
Continuing with the example, let's say you...
wake up every morning dreading the work day.
feel yourself tense up as you walk in the door at work.
feel your stomach churn each time your boss evaluates your work.
leave at the end of each day with a headache
have difficulty getting to sleep & find that you lie in bed going over what happened at work
(3) What are you aiming for on this journey? If it's not going to be possible to get rid of the stress, what do you hope will change for you?
Using our example, you might choose...
sleeping well at night & waking up with more positive thoughts & feelings
being able to get through the day without headaches
lessening the tension you feel at work
Once you have a list of what you hope will change, the thoughts, the feelings, and the physical stress, you'll have identified the target you're going to be aiming at for the rest of our stress posts.
During the next week, read through your lists and create a new story. the one where this daily stress doesn't take you down with it. Where, until you can find a way out of the stress, you can survive it with grace. And peace.
What would that look like for you? Imagine it in as much detail as you can. And next Thursday, we'll get back to it.
